My limited understanding of how the accelerated graphics stuff works is that if a card/driver does not provide hardware acceleration for a given GL feature, a software implementation will be used, which is always causing a heavy CPU load and bad performance. I would guess that the way the new GUI is implemented is causing the QT libraries use OpenGL in some different way from before, and this is using some GL feature which is not accelerated in your graphics drivers. Stellarium is a very cool project, and it is nice to have such a tool available, even though I tend to just like to be able to look up at night and occasionally have something to be able to put a name to what is visible! I have since added Slackware 12.2 to my laptop, and use that all the time now, though I haven't tried version 0.10.x at all and have 0.9.1 installed. but replacing it with 0.9.highest and it was fine, just like under Ubuntu. I then installed 0.10.x on the Windows XP partition, but it was just permanent 100% CPU. I originally installed Stellarium on my laptop from the Ubuntu repositories, and got a varient of version 0.9.x. 100% CPU use and an extremely unresponsive system (almost as if the process or a misbehaving thread is at a higher priority - other apps that use 100% CPU don't make the machine so unresponsive, like a run-away Explorer window or a running LAME mp3 encode). Even on my 5 year old laptop with a cheap built-in graphics card and a high screen resolution, I can get 30-50 fps if the OpenGL acceleration is working. ![]() If this reads less that 10, you are probably not getting OpenGL acceleration. After Stellarium is loaded, you should be able to see an FPS (frames per second) measurement in the status bar. When this is the case, all OpenGL calls are processed by the CPU (as opposed to the GPU on the graphics card). This behavior is consistent with your using a video card driver is not OpenGL accelerated. ![]()
